With the millions of songs composed, recorded and released, you would think that there are no more melodies left to compose, no more new rhythms to sing to. Well, you’re wrong, because as long as you put your mind and heart into it, you can still think of wonderful songs that people can sing to.
The first step is getting that guitar or piano and playing and singing along with it. Of course, writing that music presupposes that you at least thought about a theme for your song, because you would not want incompatibility or inappropriateness between your words and your melody. Try playing just about any chord progression, taking into consideration that theme that you write about. Try to incorporate some words or your lyrics if you have, into the chord progression, and vary the tempo if you must. If you have created a wonderful melody but you feel like the lyrics do not fit, you can just write better lyrics for it. Who knows, it might just be your best composition of all time.
Once you have a great melody, decide on the arrangement for your composition. One simple pattern is the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge, or you can try the verse-verse-bridge-verse which is also a common arrangement. If you are going to spend a long time on a part, it would have to be the chorus, because it is the part that people would remember from the radio. It is the most crucial part of the song, since people prefer choruses that they can sing and relate to.
Be very patient about this because writing one song can actually take days. If you’re having a lucky day, however, you can write a simple song in 5 minutes. The keyword here is focus.
