Firstly you need to get your band out there on the music scene. You need to get your name known and create a buzz and a following, build up a fan base with a lot of support. Find some smaller venues that are willing to give new bands a chance and perhaps play some larger venues for free so that at least you can showcase your talents and prove that you are good enough to be re-booked. This way you can then fill the venue with your loyal supporters and prove to the venue owner that you are worth paying at the higher rate. At the end of the day being a musician is like any other business and you have to work hard and prove yourself before it is time to earn the big money. Becoming a musician will not make you rich and famous overnight and it takes a lot of hard work, practice and hours and hours of dedication each and every week. Always remember that owners of a bar or club will be making their money on ticket sales and food and drink and not in showcasing your talent. If you, a great band brings 30 people along for the night and an awful band brings in their regular 100 strong following of fans then it will always be the awful band that will be rebooked as they will ultimately make the owner the most money. This is why you should build up your fan base and following first so that your band is well known so you can then bring in a lot of money for the larger venues. If this means playing the smaller venues for free first of all to build this following and get yourself known then this is what you have to do. Marketing is also very important and creating a brand for your band. Make sure you are getting yourself known via the various social network sites such as Twitter and Facebook as well as Myspace and perhaps creating your own website as this is a very low cost way to market yourself. Get your music onto these sites so that you can get people interested enough to come out and see you at your gigs. Also you should sell your merchandise whether it is a t-shirt with your band name, car bumper stickers or demo CD’s to sell at your gigs.
