How to make more money from your gigs

Becoming a musician means that you are an artist and this can be exhausting to perform alongside your main job. Being a musician does not mean you shouldn’t get paid for what you do however and there are many ways in which to increase your earnings. You just need to stretch your thinking; just because you enjoy what you are doing it really shouldn’t mean you having to do it for free. Earning money as a musician is important as it will pay for studio time whilst recording as well as new or extra musical equipment and any additional marketing that you may need. When you are speaking with a venue owner you must ask to be paid what you are worth; if you have experience and you are good at what you do then you shouldn’t have to beg for the gig. You should tell the venue owner what you are doing to create hype about the gig so that he will know that you intend to fill the place the night of your performance so let them know all the details of your following and the marketing tools you will use. At the end of the day the venue owner stands to make a lot of money if you do well so it is worth pushing forward your case as best you can. Make sure that you don’t drink too much as any profit you stand to make could end up paying your bar bill at the end of the night! Your marketing will make you extra money too such as selling your t-shirts and CD’s at the show…Always make sure you take a marketing stand with you to gigs so that all your merchandise is clearly displayed for everyone to see. Try not to overprice things at first and just keep things at an affordable price; it would be different if you were playing at a huge stadium and your name was Aerosmith but it’s not that time just yet. Earn enough to make a small profit and get your name out there. You can also send a tip jar out to the audience or a couple of metal buckets; when everyone sees everyone else putting into this they will also follow suit and this will give you extra money. Also spread the word; make sure everyone knows when you will be performing, send out emails to your existing fans, put notifications on your websites and stick up posters in as many public places as you can. This will ensure that the numbers are high as well as the profit and ensure that you are re-booked.
