It is an unfortunate reality that for the last two decades young people have missed out on seeing live musicians. There are a number of reasons for this but the main reason is that for the last 20 years children have been infatuated with computers. In this time we have seen the video and DVD technology and the computer consoles which have kept almost every young person within the refines of their houses. Years ago it would have been virtually unheard of not to have planned your Saturday night to include seeing a live band of some sorts. These days everyone seems to spend all their leisure time at home and no one seems to venture out much. Saturday night to me was a live band and a Sunday night was always the cinema two of these leisurely activities which are a rarity these days. Thanks to computers young people now have any music they could ever wish for at their fingertips and can even download most of their favorite music for free. They can listen to their favorite bands online and even seek out new bands in the same way; through music social networks. The other reason that young people are not getting to see so much live music is due to the fact that venues are finding it hard to cover the increasing overheads and they now have to buy licenses to be able to have live music which are very expensive. You would be amazed to find that these days if you were to ask 100 twenty year old students if they had seen a live band before and you would be shocked to find a huge percentage will say no! Had you asked the same question 20 years ago, the majority without a doubt would have said yes. If you walk into a gig now you will always be able to spot the young people for whom this night is the first time they have ever seen a live performance. You can spot them as they are stood, glued to the spot with their jaw dropped in amazement. People now are used to having the flat screen performance and are totally shocked when they actually see a live musician at work. No one is open and exposed to many music styles anymore as the radio and the Internet will only play the mainstream. How are you to know which type of music you really like when you are not out there seeing every style?
