Myths of being discovered

With so many excellent and talented bands out there the music industry will always be the most competitive market that anyone could ever wish to enter into. The few bands that actually manage to make it are the ones that want it the most. By saying ‘wanting it the most’ doesn’t mean that it is just a case of wishing for it as hard as you can. Wanting it the most will mean dedication and putting in hours and hours of practice and jamming sessions and pretty much living, breathing and sleeping music. All your free time needs to be devoted to your music and if there is even the tiniest window where you can afford some extra time this will mean having to work on your marketing skills. Your marketing you will have to treat like any other business and this will mean getting a website built, leasing with venue owners, building a following with social network sites and playing free gigs to get yourself known and create a buzz. Being discovered really doesn’t work as it seems on the TV or in movies and the odds of being discovered whilst working in a small club or waiting a table in a restaurant will be extremely low. There have always been stories of a waitress being discovered whilst waiting the table of someone from the music industry but in reality you have more chance of winning the National lottery so don’t just sit back and hope. In other words, without a good recording it is very unlikely that you will be discovered. There is always the myth of the numbers game when it comes to being discovered. You still have a very slim chance of being discovered even if you call and post your demo CD to every single person within the music industry so forget that route. If you are fortunate enough to get a record deal it doesn’t mean that you will immediately get rich so forget that notion straight away. Some bands and musicians that get a contract don’t even get to record and if they do sometimes they are not even lucky enough to be released. Also it is a myth that to be discovered that you won’t need a great recording demo. You will indeed need a great recording which has to be made professionally and a good deal of money spent on a professional recording studio.
