Whether you are a musician that is just starting out or a seasoned musician you must always consider the security implications for your equipment. You may like many musicians have various different guitars, amps, pedals and sound equipment in your home. This equipment can be worth thousands of pounds and you certainly wouldn’t want to come home one day to find that it has all been stolen. You should always make sure that your equipment is insured and you can do this as a separate premium or add your equipment to your existing home contents insurance. You always need to write down all the serial numbers of all your musical equipment also so that in the event that it is stolen the police may be able to trace it if it is sold on to local shops and be able to return it back to you. Keep a log of all serial numbers even if you are not insured. A friend of mine had his equipment stolen and found it all in a local pawn shop but as he had no proof of purchase he was unable to have it returned to him without actually buying it back! If you are keeping your equipment in your garage as this is your rehearsal space then make sure that your garage has some sort of security system put in place whether it is fitting motion sensors or a full alarm system. This is always the most important as it will be heard or seen by all around that this is where you rehearse and is almost a carrot for any local thieves. The other concern when looking at security for your equipment is when you are playing regular gigs and need to load or unload your equipment from your vehicle outside a venue. If you are in the process of taking leads inside this could give ample opportunity to a thief to quickly pick up and run away with n amp or a guitar. Always make sure that your car is locked in between loading and off loading as there will be a lower chance of someone making a quick getaway if they have to physically break into your vehicle first. You can always make sure that a friend or band member are standing by the car as you are offloading to make sure that everything is safe.
